Lagos Wooden Tower Introduces Green Construction to Africa's Largest City

Lagos Wooden Tower Introduces Green Construction to Africa's Largest City

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Hermann Kamte, young Cameroonian architect and the founder of company Hermann Kamte & Associates (HKA), is the driving force behind the famous sketch of Lagos Wooden Tower. Originally designed as a submission for Metsa Wood's City Above the City competition, Kamte's design looks to tackle the problem of poorly planned construction in many African cities by pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture.

In the City Above the City competition, participants were invited to suggest solutions for new housing on top of existing urban buildings, using Metsa Wood's Kerto® LVL (laminated veneer lumber) as the main material.

Kamte's highly innovative design used Kerto® LVL to construct an 87-metre high tower on top of an existing concrete building in the heart of Nigeria's capital city, Lagos. Mixed residential spaces, separated by open floors featuring sky gardens and amenities, are shaded and ventilated by a stylised wooden envelope using symbols that reflect Nigerian Yoruba heritage.

The Popular Street Named After Orlando Martins, First Nigerian Hollywood Star

Orlando Martins Street on the Lagos Island of Lagos State in southwest of Nigeria is named after the first Nigerian Hollywood star, Orlando Martins who had an illustrious career as an actor in Britain, America and Nigeria from 1926 to 1971.

Orlando Martins Street (formerly Strachan Street) is located in the southeast of Lagos Island. It is about 212 meters long; in one of the busiest business districts and residential areas of Africa's largest megacity. It connects the popular Igbosere Road and the Tafawa Balewa Square beside the
Lagos State High Court, Court of Appeal and the old Federal Supreme Court. The beginning of the street is opposite the Lapal House with SCOA Motors Plc and a branch of FirstBank Plc beside the MRS filling station by the Lawson Street and Strachan Street. The end of the street from the Igbosere Road to the Tafawa Balewa Square is the military zone of the offices of Ministry of Defence and is cordoned off from vehicular traffic for security reasons.
The street has been taken over by local food restaurants called "bukas" selling hot foods straight from the cookers for hungry residents and the workers from the nearby government offices and private companies. Roadside mechanics have also found enough space for their garage.

Nollywood Movies in Indigenous Languages Are Better than Those in English Language

Nollywood Movies in Indigenous Languages Are Better than Those in English Language
Their story lines are more socially-relevant, the plots are more engaging and the interpretation of roles more mature than home videos in English.

This is especially true of Yoruba movies with rich tradition that goes back in time long before Nollywood.
