AFRIMA CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF AFRICAN MUSIC ICON, HUGH MASEKELA The International Committee of AFRIMA (All Africa Music Awards) celebrates the life of an African music icon and activist, Hugh Masekela as he passed on peacefully at his country home, Johannesburg, South Africa after a protracted battle with prostate cancer on January 23, 2018 at the aged 78. Masekela was nominated for three nominations at the 2017 AFRIMA Awards in the categories of 'Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa' for his recent single 'Shango', 'Album of the Year' for his recent album 'No Borders' and for the 'Best Artiste in African Jazz'. These three nominations show that the legend waxed strong till his last breadth. Masekela was scheduled to be at the host city, Lagos, Nigeria, for the 2017 AFRIMA Awards in November but was unable to make it due to his ill health in spite all his efforts.

Closing Film : "The Death of Stalin" by Armando Iannucci. Deborah Haywood's British film "Pin Cushion" opened the IFFR Live programme of the 47th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). All the 6 films for the 2018 IFFR Live programme were directed by women. The films will be simulcast from the film festival to cinemas in more than 40 countries, including an African country for the first time. The films are: "Messie And Maude (La Holandesa)" by Marleen Jonkman, starring Rifka Lodeizen; Susanna Nicchiarelli’s "Nico 1988"; Olga Chajdas’s "Nina", Lisa BrĂ¼hlmann’s "Blue My Mind", Gabriela Pichler’s "Amateurs"  and Deborah Haywood’s "Pin Cushion".

Orlando Martins Street on the Lagos Island of Lagos State in southwest of Nigeria is named after the first Nigerian Hollywood star, Orlando Martins who had an illustrious career as an actor in Britain, America and Nigeria from 1926 to 1971. Orlando Martins Street (formerly Strachan Street) is located in the southeast of Lagos Island. It is about 212 meters long; in one of the busiest business districts and residential areas of Africa's largest megacity. It connects the popular Igbosere Road and the Tafawa Balewa Square beside the Lagos State High Court, Court of Appeal and the old Federal Supreme Court. The beginning of the street is opposite the Lapal House with SCOA Motors Plc and a branch of FirstBank Plc beside the MRS filling station by the Lawson Street and Strachan Street. When his ship goes down, an officer has to make an agonizing decision on his overcrowded lifeboat.
